Why you should wear a high collar in your office this fall

Why you should wear a high collar in your office this fallWhy you should wear a high collar in your office this fallShoulder pads, high heels, a tailored suit, the black turtleneck, etc., All of these at one point have been considered power items of clothing. And this fall another power item will be making the rounds, but it isnt very original. We have seen this look over the years but perhaps in this era of MeToo and protests it is quite fitting literally.Get ready to see some high collars in your office. High Elizabethan-type collars were all over the spring 2019 New York Fashion Week runways including Versace, Gucci, and Chanel. Ruffled collars used to represent your social class and power level. The bigger the collar, the more formidable you were.Ian Mortimer wrote inThe Time Travelers Guide to Elizabethan England, At the height of the craze, in the 1580s and 1590s, ruffs are made up of up to six yards of starched material, with up to 600 pleats in them, extending eight inches o r more from the neck. This is why we saw titans like Queen Elizabeth wear them. Though both women and men wore these collars, for women it was especially a power move as a womans neck has a bit of a vulnerable, fragile status associated with it. A high collar gives it a robust accentuation more so than even a anschauung necklace.High-collared womenAnd that powerful neck piece has remained powerful even if we (thankfully) removed a few yards of material. As Vanity Fair writer Keziah Weir pointed out in a recent piece,Ruth Bader Ginsburg wore collars and ruffs around her uniform robes to show she was distinctly different than the others and that feminity should be synonymous with power not contrarian. Pioneer dressing and prairie chic have also been making the retail rounds complete with high-buttoned up collars. In addition to the runways, we are also seeing this high collar movement in films this fall. Of course, it is all the rage in Mary Queen of Scots as Saoirse Ronan (Mary) and Ma rgot Robbie (Queen Elizabeth) duke it out over who gets to be the most powerful in all the land in Kabuki-like makeup, giant red hair and of course, those triumphant collars. In On the Basis of Sex, we also get to see a young Ruth Bader Ginsberg (played by Felicity Jones) abflug to find her voice in her incredible career as well as her fashion sense. And in A Simple Favor, Blake Livelys enigmatic walking contradiction of a neighbor traipses around in mens suits and collars. Weir also points out that in the upcoming film Colette, starring Keira Knightly as a ghostwriter for her husband of a hit novel that ends up giving him all the glory and credit, uses her collar fashion game to rebel against her controlling husband.Even the new power suit for women features high ruffled collars and bright colors and patterns as power dressing doesnt mean not being feminine-style has to be eliminated. Wall Street Journal Haley Phelan wrote, Women are encouraged to play to their individual strengths , rather than struggle to conform to some preconceived ideal. And naturally, theyll need a new uniform for this changing environment- one thats sophisticated, with a side of sticking-it-to-the-man tude.

New SAT Places Significant Emphasis on Career Readiness

New SAT Places Significant Emphasis on Career ReadinessNew SAT Places Significant Emphasis on Career ReadinessThe SAT widely considered to be one of the most important exams a student will take in his or her academic life is changing drastically. When students sit down for the test in March 2016, theyll encounter a completely redesigned format that places significant emphasis on college and career readiness and skills such as reasoning, data analysis and critical thinking. The SAT, which impacts high school students college admissions success, scholarship dollars and futures, will affect nearly 2 million students. In order to tackle the test with the right amount of knowledge and confidence, students (and their parents) must approach how they prepare for the exam in an entirely different way.The redesigned SAT will demand more from students than ever before, says Dr. Raymond Huntington, co-founder of Huntington Learning Center, a tutoring and test prep company that places curricular knowledge at the center of test prep. In the history of the SAT, preparation has never been more essential to success than it will be with the redesigned exam. Students must have deep foundational knowledge and demonstrate ability to reason, analyze and think critically in real-world contexts. Cramming for the test or employing test-taking tricks will not get students the knowledge or scores they need to enter and succeed in college. To prepare properly for the exam and achieve the desired result, here are tips for both parents and students1. Understand the changesThe exam has been overhauled with changes to both format and content. Test length, timing and score components for the redesigned SAT will be different than its predecessor. For example, students will no longer be penalized for answering a question incorrectly. With regard to content, students will be expected to master concepts that address college and career readiness, and key skills such as analysis and reasoning. For i nstance, all reading content will be passage-based and will place strong emphasis on students ability to understand vocabulary in context, focusing on more commonly used words, rather than simply demonstrating reading comprehension.2. Know the datesThe first administration of the redesigned SAT is scheduled for March 2016. The class of 2017 and 2018 are most affected by the change, but the class of 2016 still has an opportunity to take the current SAT in January 2016, which is likely the safest bet. Regardless of the format, it is never too early to start preparing for these exams, as it is the best way to ensure success and avoid last-minute, ineffective cramming. Some students begin preparing a few months in advance for others, its several months or longer.3. Be aware that tips and tricks wont workThe redesigned SAT requires a mastery of core academic concepts and an ability to apply these concepts in real-world scenarios. For example, in the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing se ction, reading questions will feature charts and graphs similar to ones students will most likely encounter in science and social science majors as well as their careers. Math questions will also test more complex skills, and questions will build on one another.4. Know your optionsAs the SAT will see significant changes, which could cause uncertainty on the part of students and parents, the ACT is another viable college-entrance exam option. The ACT, which focuses on core high school curriculum and what a student has learned, is accepted at all four-year U.S. colleges and has overtaken the SAT in popularity.Huntington, whose team of educational experts analyzed the new tests blueprint to uncover key changes and developed a rigorous curriculum to address them, is launching a new SAT prep program in July that will be available in its 260 centers across the nation. For more information about the redesigned SAT, including key dates and considerations, visitwww.huntingtonhelps.com/program /sat-redesignedand download a free copy ofHuntingtons Guide to the Understanding the Redesigned SAT.

Why heist movies like Oceans 8 motivate you

Why heist movies like Oceans 8 motivate youWhy heist movies like Oceans 8 motivate youTo motivate myself enough to start writing this piece, I put on Oceans 11.Not that it was my first choice. Between us, I originally sought out The Godfather - but then I discovered Netflix Canada had taken it away, so I went with Oceans instead. To be clear, I in no way, shape, or form want to be Michael Corleone. But the mans work ethic is something Im jealous of, and Danny Oceans comes pretty close. And for better or worse, watching both of these masterminds at work gets me fired up - because thats what good heist movies do.Id like to be someone whose productivity doesnt zurechtge on living vicariously through fictional criminals, but the success of movies and TV series that revolve around them has led me to believe its fine. Throughout the 2000s, we all congregated around Walter White and Tony Soprano, defining and re-defining terms like anti-hero to water down the fact that we were, against ou r better judgment, rooting for them. From there, we went on to debate the ethics of characters like Star Wars Kylo Ren, Gone Girls Amy Dunne, and even Scandals Olivia Pope to remind ourselves that most of us dont fall into ethical categories of black or white, but, far more often, into shades of grey. True to form, this is how I plan to justify over-romanticizing Oceans 8 (out this weekend) in the same way I embraced its 2001-era predecessor. Because sure, it may be illegal to rob the Met or hit a casino, but goddamn It sure takes a lot of work ethic and effort to do it.Stories about people who work hard are great. But stories about people who work hard, together, to achieve a common goal that none of us could emulate alone unless we were genius millionaires (or had financial backing) are even better. Oceans 11 may be a good film because of its characters, dialogue, and general execution, but itd be heartbreakingly empty and pointless without the collective dynamic of its leads. Ima gine two hours of George Clooney, by himself, just, like, trying to charm Julia Roberts while simultaneously trying to rob one of the biggest casinos in the world. It would be startling, itd be pathetic - and itd be a lesson in how notlage to live ones life. It wouldnt be a tale about pulling off something cool with a bunch of like-minds, itd be a movie about some dude who was completely delusional and super weird.Instead, Oceans 11 - and good, decent, heist films like it - give us the opportunity to be delusional and weird. We dont watch these movies and think about the real-life consequences of being caught, or that the only place we would ever see a cast of characters so exciting, funny, and colorful come together is on-screen. Nor do we think about how characters like Tom Hanks FBI werber in Catch Me If You Can are the real heroes, and that we should be actively rooting against Leonardo DiCaprio. (As if I would, but I hear youre supposed to.) Instead, were given a chance to w atch the art of outsmarting in action, and to take the side of the bad guys/gals. And when a character is likeable, and the outsmarting is done well, its impossible not to cheer for them and to root against whoevers trying to ruin everything.Which isnt to say anybody here wants to knock over a casino or to snag a bunch of diamonds that dont belong to us. (So dont start spreading anything about me.) Instead, these movies, these stories, and these characters offer a buffet of choices from which to inspire ones self. I dont romanticize Rusty in Oceans or Michael Corleone because I want to do what they do - I romanticize the traits they exhibit that I can apply to my own life, hopefully without destroying it in the process. Ambition, intelligence, drive, work ethic - all of these are awesome things. The key is to use them without ruining somebody elses life (within reason) or, you know, doing something very illegal and going to jail. What I like in these heroes (or villains, whatever) are things Ive yet to fully embrace in myselfPlus, theres that element of fun to it all. (Something I think weve all become unfamiliar with, but lets give it a whirl for a couple of hours.) Because who isnt going to see Oceans 8 and not wish we were any of its leads? Who isnt going to sit there, mentally tallying the pals theyd join forces with to pull off a job thats impossible outside of a scripted film or show? Who isnt going to leave the theater asking, What would Eight tanzabend do? or hoping they have a fraction of the confidence of Cate Blanchett asking Sandra Bullock why shes doing one last job? Who isnt going to feel inspired in some strange, inexplicable way, and then search maniacally for a place in which they can assert this new dose of ambition? Who isnt going to wonder if they can do a version of this remarkable thing in their own lives?Which gets at the root of why heist movies are so damn inspirational I may be sitting on my couch watching 2001-era Brad Pitt and Carl Reiner and writing, but if this beautiful, perfect, motley crew can coordinate long enough to screw over Andy Garcia, then I know I can focus long enough to deliver something thats relatively readable.Because what I like in these heroes (or villains, whatever) are things Ive yet to fully embrace in myself. Heist movies, then, are a much-needed reminder that its OK to be a little calculating, or to dream big, or not to cower in the wake of confrontation. Its OK to reassure myself that Im allowed to be colorful while existing in the realm of grey, and to find friends that bring out the best in me instead of those I cant plan and plot with. Again, within reason. For the record, I dont want any of us to rob anything. I just want us to feel inspired enough to know that we could if we really wanted to.Until the next film, at least.Anne T. The power of negotiating boundaries

The power of negotiating boundariesThe power of negotiating boundariesA thoughtEvery interaction between people is guided by invisible norms. No matter where it is?- ?at work, at the gym, or at the bar?- ?the words that are spoken between individuals will always be guided by the context that underlies the situation they find themselves in.If two people know each other sufficiently well, then this context will predominantly grow out the interpersonal culture they have created between them?- ?a place where their inside jokes, their secrets, their shared histories live, a place that forms their bond. But in situations where they are relative strangers, the context will mainly be dictated by the environmental norms around them.Every successful interaction (which leads to the creation of what we call trust) grows when we move further away from the environmental norms to a deeper interpersonal culture. When Im talking to one of my best friends, I can say a lot of things that make complete s ense in their world, things that bring us closer, but these things wouldnt make any sense to someone else. When Im talking to a new, prospective client, on the other hand, I initially have to be very careful about what I say and how I say it, so that whatever it is Im saying neatly fits into their existing conception of what someone like me should be saying to them in that parteicular situation.Eventually, this may change, but at first, I have to accommodate their conditioned expectations.Whether directly or indirectly, everything we do is shaped by ur relationship to people. Humans live in such a connected world that even then we think we are acting only in relation to some object or structure, quite often, we are still operating in the social sphere, where other people have established norms we are expected to abide by.A lot of life, as a result, is a matter of interacting with these silent norms in a way that allows us to remold their form to better accommodate ur individual want s and needs. Or put differently Life is a game of negotiating boundaries.Any time I say something to a stranger, Im either accommodating the predominant norm that dictates the situation or I am breaking outside of it I am deciding which side of the boundary I should fall on with each word I say, with each ausprgung I share, with each conversation I introduce. At the beginning of any relationship, accommodating the norm is what creates trust. It tells the person you respect their social boundaries. If you dont do this, often, the other person will be suspicious of the interaction because their expectations are being completely reshuffled before they have had a chance to get to know you and what you want. After an initial introductory period, however, the creation of trust shifts from people upholding existing norms to people breaking them to create an interpersonal culture. Most relationships we form remain in the introductory period, where norms are constantly upheld, and societal bou ndaries are always respected. We do this for various reasons its comfortable, its what people expect, and usually, its just not practically necessary to push any further. But one of the main reasons we remain here, one that pretty much everyone struggles with in one context or another, is that we lack courage.Negotiating boundaries sometimes means breaking boundaries, and that also means we have to expose ourselves beyond norms. When people say that vulnerability is what brings us together, this is what they mean?- ?that we have to risk expressing ourselves in a way that defies expectation so that we can get the other person to break a norm with us to create a new norm, a norm that is personal individualized to our particular relationship. An interpersonal culture may widen if two people continue to spend time with each other, adding to their shared experiences, but it only ever deepens when one party or the other is willing to bare themselves against the grain. When a salesperson tel ls a long-term client not to buy a particular product from a company that worships revenue, because after listening to the clients problem, he realizes its a poor fit, hes breaking a norm. When a teenage boy makes an effort to flirt with a girl in his class to create sexual tension between them, hoping to move beyond the vague friendship they have, he is breaking a norm. When a friend tells another friend that she has lied to him in the past about something that is no longer of any practical consequence because she feels its the right thing to do, she is breaking a norm.We often measure our relationships by the length of time we have sustained them. We take more pride in a friendship that has lasted 20 years than one that has been around, say, five years. And there is sense to this Time is a robust measurement when it comes to valuing the survival of something. That said, time only adds shared experienced to an interpersonal culture, which may make a relationship broader, but by its elf, it can never make it deeper.Depth directly correlates with courage?- ?with the breaking of existing norms to create new, personal norms. And courage is about moments?- ?doing what you ought to do when you ought to do it, even if it risks harm.Unspoken boundaries define every interaction we have. These boundaries create shapes and forms that enforce the surface area of our movements within the social sphere. To deepen our relationships- to expand this surface area?- ?then, we have to learn to negotiate the rigidity of these boundaries by amalgamating them with our own wants and needs. What lies on the other side of an old boundary is a new world, but this world can only be accessed by a willingness to take risks, to exercise courage, to take bold steps.A memoryIm sitting under a cloudy sky. Now that the sun has tucked itself away, it should feel gloomy, a little dark even, but after the heavy downpour earlier, there is a lingering freshness in the air?- ?born out of an augmente d smell of greenery and the calm, floating breeze.I pull out a cigarette. The bar Im at is both open and intimate, and any one part in it will put you in sight of every other part. One section is covered by a roof It has music, and it has a dance floor, and most distinctly, it has a corner to its right-hand side where strangers are getting their bodies tattooed by other strangers for no reason outside the fact that they are there and its an option. But Im adjacent to this section, beyond the cover of the roof. Where Im sitting, there is an oval-esque rink that a few skateboarders are diving in and out of. This is the main draw, the reason so many people are here. The crowd is all around it?- ?watching, talking, breathing in the scenery.Do you have a lighter? I ask the girl sitting beside me on the floor. She smiles and gives me one. What brings you here? the girl says when I return it. By here she is partially referring to the bar we are in, but mostly, shes wondering why I have travele d to this place, a somewhere, a place that clearly neither of us call home.Ive heard good things over the years. I dont know. I felt like it was time to come binnensee it with my own eyes. Its a place worth seeing with your own eyes. Its the third time Ive been here, and it feels like I find something new to love about it with each visit. We continue the small talk for a while longer. She tells me where shes from and what she does, and I tell her where Im from and what I do. We make the odd joke, and we compliment the styles of the skateboarders.Actually, the real reason Im here is that Im looking for connection, I say after a brief silence. We make eye contact. I smile lightly. She does, too. Then, she slowly raises her eyebrows as if to ask me to continue my thought. There is something about places like this that reduces friction, like there are fewer games to play, fewer hurdles to jump over. Maybe Im looking for a shortcut, maybe this isnt it. But there is something about being away from home, from a place of prior expectations, that makes it easier to be with strangers, to see them, to connect beyond the superficial.I gauge her reaction with each sentence I utter, not entirely sure where Im going with it all other than to see where it leads.Yeah, its like the societal baggage has been left behind, and with it, the bullshit, she laughs. No one is home here, which means that everybody is trying to figure it out as they go along. Its actually one of my favorite things about this place?- ?seeing how people deal with the lack of history. Its almost like it brings out a purity in us that is otherwise so clouded we forget it exists. Something about honesty, something about openness.Or maybe it just provides a temporary escape from who you really are. Or maybe it gives you a sprinkle of something novel that you confuse for permanence. Or maybe youre just distracted, looking for something you could just as well find at home. Or maybe, I guess, youre right. She has a loo k of lightness on her face as she says this, like shes either teasing or testing me, like this is her way of both showing and uncovering.I just laugh a little, I think youve pinned me down.I thought I might have, she says, smiling back.We talk for another hour before Im out of both cigarettes and beer, realizing Ive lost my friends, too. We talk about the places we have been and the places we want to go, the people we have met and the people we want to meet, the books we have read and the books we want to read. Before I get up to leave, we exchange numbers. I dont expect to ever see her again, and it doesnt matter. Our encounter has served its purpose. The rest of the night is spent similarly hopping from part of the bar to another, clashing with one person or another, hearing one story or another. Everything is easy, everyone is loose, every moment is unburdened. There are no expectations, no inhibitions. There is just movement and boundaries and the elastic space between the two.Wan t to think and live smarter? Air Force Customs and Courtesies

Air Force Customs and CourtesiesAir Force Customs and CourtesiesWithin the Air Force, there are numerous customs and courtesies that have evolved. These come from both a need for order and an established tradition of respect among military personnel. These customs arent just basic politeness but are important parts of morale-building and discipline. And military customs and courtesies are designed to help ensure respect for the chain of command. One of the oldest and most revered traditions across all branches of the U.S. military is showing respect for the American flag. Saluting is an important way for juniorchefin military members to show respect for officers. And even things like entering or exiting a vehicle have a proper order when it comes to a group of mixed-rank military members. Here are some of the most fundamental courtesies expected of Air Force (and other U.S. military) personnel. Showing Respect for the American Flag All personnel in uniform and outside must face a nd salute the flag while it is raised and lowered. When the national anthem or the bugle call To the Colors are played, all personnel in uniform who arent in formation are expected to stand and face the flag and hold a salute until the song is ended. Any vehicles in motion should stop as the music is played, and occupants should sit quietly until the music ends. When wearing civilian clothes, military personnel should face the flag and stand at attention with the right hand over the heart. If indoors during retreat or reveille, theres no need to stand or salute. However, everyone must stand during the playing of the national anthem, such as before a movie is played in a base theater. Theres no expectation for military personnel to salute a folded or cased flag, or to stand during the national anthem when it is performed on television or the radio. Saluting Senior Military Officers The salute is a greeting that requires the junior member to acknowledge the senior member first. A salute is also rendered to the flag as a sign of respect. Any airman, noncommissioned officer (NCO)or officer may salute at any time. When saluting, the head and eyes are turned toward the flag or person saluted. When in ranks, a position of attention is maintained unless otherwise directed. Outdoor salutes are exchanged between officers or warrant officers and enlisted members of the armed forces whenever they are in uniform. Enlisted members are not required to salute among themselves. This applies both on and off military installations. The junior member should always begin a salute in time to allow the senior officer to return it. If the oben liegend officer has his hands full or is otherwise unable to return the salute physically, he can nod or acknowledge it verbally. These procedures are also followed when greeting an officer of a foreign nation. When in formation, members do not salute unless given the command to do so. Normally the person in charge salutes on behalf of the whole formation. If a senior officerapproaches a group, not in formation, the first person who notices the officer calls the rest of the group to attention. Then, all face the officer and salute. All in the group must remain at attention unless otherwise ordered if the officer addresses the group or a member of the group. Once the conversation has ended, the group salutes the officer. Salutes between individuals are not required in public gatherings, such as sporting events or meetings, or when a salute would be inappropriate or impractical. Salutes between military pedestrians such as gate sentries and officers in moving military vehicles are not required. If a passenger in the vehicle is easily identified, such as in a marked staff vehicle, a salute is expected. Military members in uniform may salute civilians, and must always salute the president of the United States, in her capacity as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Also, if appropriate, it is customary for military me mbers in civilian clothes to exchange salutes upon recognition. When in a work detail, individual workers do not salute, rather the person in charge salutes for the entire detail. And when indoors, except for formal reporting and some military ceremonies, salutes are not required. Some Exceptions to Saluting If your arms are full, you dont have to salute simply extend a verbal greeting. Always try tocarry items in your left hand if possible so you can salute. If an officers arms are full, but yours are not, extend a verbal greeting and salute. Once the officer acknowledges your salute or passes you, drop your salute. Salutes are not required if either member is incivilian clothing. You may salute if you recognize the officer. Do not salute empty staff vehicles or ones without an officer bumper plate or flag. If you and an officer are walking in the same direction, and you overtake the officer from the rear, you may pass the officer from behind without saluting. An appropriate ver bal greeting, such as by your leave, sir, is customary. In addition to common etiquette such as being on time, refraining from gossipand using please and thank you whenever possible, there are some additional expectations within the military. Military members should address civilians with courtesy titles such as Mr. or Ms. as a general rule. Always address a superior formally, unless otherwise instructed. Courtesies to Other Services TheAir Force, Army, and Navy, Marinesand Coast Guard all are part of the military team, so military members should extend the same military courtesies to members of the other tafelgeschirrs. This is equally true of the friendly armed forces of the United Nations. Salute all commissioned officers and pay the same respect to the national anthems and flags of other nations as rendered the Americannational anthem and flag. While it is not necessary to learn the identifying insignia of the military grades of all nations, you should learn the insignia of the most frequently contacted nations, particularly during an overseas assignment. When walking, ridingor sitting with a senior officer, the junior person should take the position to the seniors left. Unless told otherwise, rise and stand at attention when a senior official enters or departs a room. If more than one person is present, the person who first sees the officer calls the group to attention. However, if there is an officer already in the room who is equal to or has a higher rank than the officer entering the room, do not call the room to attention. Military personnel enter automobiles and small boats in reverse order of rank. Juniors will enter a vehicle first (and take their appropriate seat on the seniors left). The senior officer will be the last to enter the vehicle and the first to leave it. Upon entering or leaving transport aircraft, the senior officer enters last and exits first. This procedure only applies to passengers and not to crewmembers of the aircraft. A ddressing Senior Officers by Name Senior service members frequently address juniors by their first names, but this practice does not give juniors the privilege of addressing seniors in any way other than by proper titles. If airmen are present, senior service members should address junior service members by their titles. Service members of the same grade, when among themselves, may address one another by their given names. Junior service members should always be conservative until they can sense what is appropriate. Its always better to err on the side of being too formal rather than too familiar.

4 Ideas to Help You Regain Control Over Your Priorities

4 Ideas to Help You Regain Control Over Yur Priorities4 Ideas to Help You Regain Control Over Your PrioritiesShadow most senior managers and organizational leaders for a day as they traverse a seemingly endless string of obstacles, interruptions, and minor and major crises, and you will be justified in wondering how they do it. Absent from the daily firefighting is time for contemplation of the larger issues and big decisions. Thats a shame because it is our ability to deliberately focus on those issues and cultivate creative solutions that allow our organizations to flourish. However, with the investment of only 20 minutes of quiet time during your day, you might just be able to regain control of your priorities and enhance your effectiveness as a manager. The Daily Reality for Most Managers The daily demands our world of work require us to draw more upon our survival skills and the fast-thinking, automatic response center of our brain. From gruppe members looking for input to b eing called in to navigate an emerging crisis with a customer, every day seems to take on the tone of the nightly news. If the emergent issues werent time and energy consuming enough, too many of us allow our time allocation to be dictated by others via control of our calendars. I regularly audit the calendars of coaching clients and typically find that more than half of the time in a typical week is spoken for by recurring meetingsscheduled by others. Most of these meetings are status updates that can easily be eliminated with a little discipline. Beware When the Fire Drill Becomes Addictive For some of us, the daily drill becomes a comfortable pattern that keeps us engaged and involved. Unfortunately, we are engaged and involved at a transactional level and once again, those larger decisions and looming issues are pushed to the back of the line. For those who become addicted to the daily sprint, time spent in contemplation of the larger issues almost seems like cheating. pers pektive are, managerial or leadership role is an improper use of their skills and interests. For conscientious leaders who understand they must find time to deal with those topics, the lack of time to deal with them is frustrating. Its time to seize control of yourself, your priorities and your daily activities. Retrain Your Brain By Carving Out20 Minutes to Focus Increasingly, top leaders and rising managers in organizations large and small describe the benefit of carving out a dedicated time in their daily lives for quiet contemplation and introspection. From the practice of meditation, or mindfulness, your ability to silence your mind and focus carefully on either something positive or nothing at all, tischsets the tone for a more controlled day with the emphasis on the right issues. While you might discount this practice as some fad intended to sell books and training, it turns out theres plenty of science supporting the benefits of focused time or meditation. At a basic lev el, the brain has a number of different control centers that support our survival. One system manages the many routine tasks of living, and we dont spend much time at all conscious of this systems activities. Another portion of the brain owns our response to danger and triggers the appropriate chemical and physiological reactions necessary when faced with an issue. When stimulated, this portion of the brain seizes control, suppressing the more deliberate, executive center where higher order thinking takes place. The executive center of our brain is responsible for slow, deliberate thinking. Its where we generate ideas, solve problems and deal with the big issues. Unfortunately, it has limited capacity and is quickly shut down by distractions. It takes effortto engage this part of the brain and reap its amazing capabilities. The work of focusing on breathing for example or simply clearing our minds allows this executive center to emerge, pushing that important but obnoxious automati c system into the background and suppressing the negative emotions that trigger fight, flight or freeze. The process of focusing and drawing upon this center supports a positive rewiring to emphasize higher order thinking. 4 Ideas to Help You Focus for 20 Minutes A search on the term mindfulness will uncover a variety of resources applicable to business professionals. However, in the interest of helping you right now, here are four ideas to help you get started in seizing control of your day and improving your effectiveness as a manager or leader. First, build a short block of time into your daily routine. If necessary, set your alarm for half an hour earlier and after you are awake, find a quiet location and deliberately eliminate distractions. My advice is to avoid your smartphone or e-mail until well after your brief period of contemplation or meditation.Try clearing your mind and focusing on your breathing. If stray thoughts trickle in, push them away and resume your concent ration on your breathing. Do this for twenty minutes. This deliberate focus fires the neurons in your executive center and strengthens the connections for your use of the center in your daily life. Invoke your Wise Advisor to consider your recent actions and outcomes. Think about someone you are struggling to deal with and ask yourself What motivates this person? Or, focus on one problem and ask yourself, How might someone else view this problem? Be careful to focus on just one issue per session.Another variation involves replacing your negative thoughts on coworkers or problems att work with more positive perspectives in order to alter your approach. The Bottom Line Regardless of what you do to press the unterlass button on the chaos and noise around you, the fact that you do it will pay dividends in terms of improved mood and attitude and an increased ability to focus on priorities. Additionally, many leaders report doing a better job engaging with and guiding team members. De velop the discipline to turn off the noise and focus internally, and you will be better prepared to not only survive but thrive.
